UberWorld Clients

If you use talkers or MUD's a lot then you'll find that the normal telnet client is a bit limited. Indeed, there are some out there that are very good (such as CRT) but when you need to be able to connect to multiple worlds, have aliases, triggers and macros then you need to download a client.

Here are a list of the most popular clients and some details about each. If you know of a client that you'd like listed here, then please let us know at admin@uberworld.org.

Tinyfugue (many platforms) [ Homepage ]

Undoubtably the most powerful of all the clients out there but also the most complicated. Often found on unix boxes, this text only client has also been ported to many other operating systems.

Pros:

  • Very powerful with lots of features.
  • Ability to write scripts.
  • Well established and very stable.

Cons:

  • Text only, everything involves (some often obscure) key presses.
  • Complicated for the beginner.
  • The windows version is appallingly slow

GMud (windows) [ Download]

A very basic but popular shareware MUD client. Supports multiple worlds, macros, triggers and aliases.

Pros:

  • Very small download and easy to install.
  • Fast and does everything someone would want for a talker.
  • Shareware, but not crippled in any way or with annoying messages

Cons:

  • Development and support for it stopped years ago.
  • Unstable under Windows NT when opening a new window.
  • Some people find it a bit too basic as a client.

ZMud (windows) [ Homepage ]

Probably the most powerful of all the windows clients out there. All the usual features plus others such as auto-mapping, built in chat and more.

Pros:

  • Very fast and packed with features.
  • Constantly developed
  • One of the most popular windows clients.

Cons:

  • Shareware and comes with 30 day evaluation (which is difficult to get around)
  • Far too many features for talker use (and sometimes for MUD's too)
  • Large download, many people find it bloated.

Pueblo (windows) [ Homepage ]

Was, until a while ago, "king" of the clients but Chaco have stopped developing it and no-one wishes to continue. Many people still swear by it

Pros:

  • Very fast and packed with features.
  • Source code is freely available.
  • Supports html formatting and inclusion of pictures.

Cons:

  • Development stopped and it is now unsupported
  • Worlds that use the html formatting are rare and it looks horrible on those that do.
  • Plagued by a black text on black background bug which causes you to miss lines of a conversation
